Starting your genealogy research

June 25th, 2009

When starting your genealogy research, decide which side of your family that you want to start with. The best one will probably be the surname that is closest to you geographically, and the one with which you have most contact. For instance if you live in south Georgia and all of your mom’s family are from the same area, but your dad’s family are from California, start with you Mom’s family first.

From the beginning of your search, be organized. Buy several notebooks, tablets, page dividers, and sheet protectors. Whenever you find records for a surname in your family, place them in a designated notebook. Keeping a journal of your research efforts will be extremely helpful. In your journal keep a list of who you have talked to, places where you have visited, your thoughts on resources, and reminders.

Begin by talking to your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close family friends. Take notes or record your conversation. When you talk to your family, try to get information on your direct ancestors, such as their full name, date of birth (and death), and places where they lived. Find out if the person of interest owned any property, if so, find out where. Do not disregard oral traditions as just old wives tales. They can be a very important source for you. Once you have obtained this information, use library resources and online resources to obtain documentation for what you were told. A genealogist is someone who researches ancestry by verifying and documenting oral information obtained from family.

There are several types of records that genealogists use: vital, probate, census, deed, and genetic. Vital records include birth certificates, death certificates, social security records, immigration/naturalization records, and military records. Birth and death certificates are extremely important, in that you can obtain the names of the parents of the person listed on the record. Examples of probate records are marriage licenses, annual returns, wills, and courts proceeding containing orders for widow and child support. Census records are taken every ten years by the US federal government. It records family information by listing names of everyone in the house, the age and position of each family member (wife, son, daughter, mother, etc).

Lastly, there are companies like Family Tree DNA that can analyze your DNA, from your mother’s or father’s direct lineage, and tell you want genetic grouping to which you belong. This analysis can confirm relationships, and match you with people who are related to you by a common ancestor.

Dumbing down with Twitter. Questions For Greg Doeyl

June 15th, 2009

Greg Doeyl, in a conversation with CNN’s Howard Kurtz and Rick Sanchez, stated that Twitter is the dumbification of America.

Here are my questions for Greg Doeyl.

Are we getting dumb from following stocks? For decades people have followed the ticker of a wide variety of stocks. Which is more valuable, a stock or a human life?

Are we getting dumb from following the weather? Do you know how many different forecasts we can obtain? And what about that weather radio?

Are police dumb for following/monitoring their dispatches? I am so glad that they get updates on reported crimes.

Are we getting dumb from following air traffic? Thank God that there is a government agency made specifically for this purpose.

Are we getting dumb from following the Music BillBoards?

Are we getting dumb from following the college Final Four or the NBA Finals? Not everyone watches every game. They get updates from various places.

Greg, if we can get quick updates on stocks, the weather, music, crime, air traffic, and sports, why is it “dumbification” when we can get quick updates on the everyday man and woman?

iReport - Black in America 2 - Your Hair Story

June 14th, 2009

Black in America 2 has an iReport assignment called, “Your Hair Story”. CNN asks, “Share your hair-story. Show us how you choose to wear your hair and share your thoughts about the perceptions, misconceptions of black hair in America.” Here is my story.

Waves

wavesSince before I was a teenager I’ve kept my hair cut low, and brushed it. I don’t consider myself to have really wavy hair, but I do have waves. I admit that when I was young, I use to put grease in my hair, but as I grew older, I stopped using grease because I saw that I didn’t need grease to get waves . All I needed to do was just brush my hair (and I didn’t have to brush my hair for hours).

As a young adult in college and now as a man in my late thirties I have to say that some African Americans are too caught up with “good hair”.  What I’ve noticed from my own experience is that if you have dark skin and appear to have some type of “good hair”, people will make rude and ignorant comments.

I don’t feel as thought I have been harassed by these comments, but I do hear them occasionally. These comments usually come after I have cut my hair, after not having done so in a few weeks (I don’t know why, but when I cut my hair after not cutting it for let’s  say, a month, my hair has more waves than If I cut it every 2 weeks).

Here are some of the comments that have been made about my hair:

- Do you have an S curl?
- That’s bama
- Eeeeuh
- Waves are out of style
- You need to wash that out.
- Juice and berries

Blacks are not the only ones who make these comments about my hair. Once after leaving a room that only included me and two white guys. I over heard one of them tell the other, “Man, he’s wearing the Pro-Line”. This comment was definitely one of the ones that ticked me off. I know enough about my family history and black history to know that Blacks have a wide variety of hair textures.

I believe that a lot of this silliness over “good hair” points to a low self esteem issue for some African Americans.

Lyrics Gone Wild

June 8th, 2009

The lyrics of many chart topping hip hop and R&B songs have gone so far pass the line that it’s basically watered down porn. The sad thing is one of the main TV networks responsible for broadcasting music with these types of lyrics is Black Entertainment Television. What is going on at the FCC when such sexually explicit content can be played for an audience of children and teenagers.

My primary exhibit is a song called “Want It, Need it” by the rapper Plies (and featuring Ashanti).

Plies

Can a man and woman just be friends?

June 7th, 2009

I was reading some of the articles on the Black in America 2 website and came across this piece from Essence magazine, Hill Harper: Lessons on Love. At the end of the article, the following questions was posed.

Do you agree with Hill that men and women can just be friends? Share your thoughts below.

Here is my response.

Men and women can be “just friends”, but there must be a clear division and balance to this type of relationship. If either has had feelings for the other then the “just friends” thing may not work. There should not be any sweet talk between “just friends”. This division should also NOT include constant hugging, kissing, gift giving/taking, paying for meals and evenings out, etc. Engaging in these actions does nothing but lead the other person on. Also, just being in constant conversation is an intimate act, especially if you are spending a significant amount of time doing so. A person does not hold a friend of the opposite sex in their back pocket, only to pull them out when they are feeling lonely or in need of some intimacy. So if this man or woman is someone who you potentially see yourself in a relationship with, then make an effort to make that happen or leave them alone and only allow them to be “just a friend”. Anything else is unfriendly.
